Mangaluru : Pointing out at people’s lack of sense on history, researcher and historian Pundikai Ganapaiah Bhat said here on Wednesday that many monuments and inscriptions have been lost because of either ignorance or superstitious beliefs.
At the valedictory of a seminar on ‘Save history and heritage’ at the University College, Hampankatta, he said architecture in many temples had become victim of renovation.
“We are destroying our own heritage without proper understanding and by taking suggestions from those who do not have a sense of history. We should not damage our own heritage in the name of astrology, devotion, and superstition,” he said.
Heritage has been lost owing to urbanisation also, he said.
P.S. Yadapadithaya, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, said when one finds materials of historical importance, experts should be informed about them. History can never be changed though some people have been talking about it, he said.
Udaya Kumar Irvathur, principal, University College, said: “We have been perceiving history not as it actually is but as we want to.”
