Mangaluru : Volunteers of Ramakrishna Mission’s Swacchata Abhiyan cleaned Dhakke and Bunder areas as part of the abhiyan’s 37th Shramadan here on Sunday.
Heaps of garbage from Dhakke’s main entrance, from the Goods Shed Junction and from Bunder Junction were removed. Four roads and drains in the areas were cleaned. Unauthorised banners and posters were removed.
The volunteers visited shops and homes nearby and created awareness on prevention of dengue, malaria and maintaining cleanliness.
About two years ago, artists under the abhiyan had drawn art works on the compound walls of the University College and Government Wenlock Hospital.
The walls were cleaned and washed on the occasion to remove the moss and dirt accumulated over the last two years.
A demonstration on preparing compost using pots was organised at St. Rita Cascia Church at Morgan’s Gate.
Father Herald Mascarenhas urged people to use the method and avoid sending their household garbage to the city corporation’s dumping yard.
As many as 57 people who had assembled there registered their names and placed demands for compost pots.
