Mangaluru: Mangaluru city observed ‘Car Free Day’ organized by Mangaluru Bicycle Club, Regional Transport Office and Mangalore Bar Association, on Thursday at Town Hall.
The campaign was held to promote the cycling not only as a hobby but as a transport mode also. The notion of the event is to reduce the use of motor vehicles at least one day in a month, so that the level of Carbon may decrease in the city.
Speaking on the occasion President of Mangaluru Bar Association, S P Chengappa said that by reducing the usage of motor borne vehicles, the city should justify its selection for the list of smart city.
“One day in a month use public transport and a considerable change in the traffic can be observed. Along with the traffic we can protect the environment from various forms of pollution also,” he said.
MCC Mayor Harinath said that car free day in a month can bring a huge difference. It will help the authorities to keep the city clean also.
Mayor Harinath flagged off the campaign. More than 100 participants cycled from Town Hall to Hampankatta and returned back from there to town Hall.
Environmentalist Rajashekhar Puranik, Regional Transport Officer G S Hegde, Superintendent of Police Bhushan G Bhorase, First Additional District and Sessions Judge C M Joshi and others were present.
