Mangaluru : Mayor Kavitha Sanil inaugurated an ‘Open Day’ organised by the university evening college under Mangalore University College here on Tuesday.
Addressing after inauguration mayor said, Open houses at University level will help students find alternatives to engineering and other professional courses, A good foundation is very essential for children at their early age to know where they want to head. They must know the routes well to reach their aims and we should facilitate it”, she said.
KM Lokesh, registrar, Mangalore University, speaking about the Open Day pointed out that the programme has been getting good respose ever since it started. “The selection of course is important for every student and it must be of his/her interest and not out of compulsion. There are many incidents where a student wanted to pursue career in humanities, but parents forced him or her to take up science. Later, it didn’t help neither the student nor the parents,” he said advising parents to allow children to study what they like.
He added that Mangalore University is not interested in marketing its its courses agressively like private varsities do. “We don’t want to work like an island and want to come out of it. The education here is affordable and fee structure is also lower than any other government university.” he added.
Lokesh said the university is mulling opening one more PG centre at Nellayadi. ” We have identified the place and further works will be undertaken soon,” he added. Mangalore University has introduced six new PG courses at its PG centre at Chikkaluvara in Madikeri from this academic year. The varsity is also mulling starting a course in medical physics at its Mangalagangothri campus in
Ravindra Kala Bhavan building, which is undergoing renovation at cost of Rs 2 crore, is expected to be ready by December. The University Grants Commission bestowed the ‘special heritage status’ on the college, the only degree college in Karnataka to get it.
