Mangalore : Mayor Praveen offered a special Ganga Pooja at the Thumbe vented dam in order to solve drinking water problems in city on Feb 21, Tuesday.
Reportedly, Ganga Pooja, which is performed when the dam is filled with water and gives a information that they must use the limited water since it may only last long for monsoon also to entire city.
Speaking on the occasion, mayor said that the dam is now full and its gates are closed. The water restored in the dam is enough to meet the needs of the city and the MCC will not have scarcity to supply water continuously to all houses.
Deputy Mayor Geetha Nayak, urged parents to teach their children the importance of water and trees and to protect and conserve nature.
Dr. Harish Kumar, the commissioner of MCC, said that the city will not face scarcity of water due to the increased water storage capacity.
Lancelot Pinto, the leader of the MCC opposition; Shashidhar Hegde, the former mayor; and Dr. Harish Kumar, the commissioner of MCC, spoke on this occasion.
L. N. Anand, the executive engineer of the Karnataka Water Supply Board, said that a new dam is of 10 – 12m height, is being constructed to store water to a depth of 7m, having a capacity of 14.74 million cubic meters.
He also said that the amount of Rs 40 crore will have to be spent on the initial phase of the construction of the dam, while the total cost can go up to Rs. 79.5 crore.
