Mangaluru : As many as 11 candidates withdrew their nominations on Monday, the last day to withdraw the nominations for to Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).
After the scrutiny and withdrawal of candidatures, the total number of candidates in fray for 60 wards of MCC is 180.
After the scrutiny on November 2, officials had found nominations of 191 candidates in order. They had rejected 32 nominations filed by various political parties and independents after the scrutiny.
A total of 236 nomination papers were received for the election as on October 31, which was the last day to file nominations.
While Congress and BJP are contesting from all the 60 wards, JD(S) is in fray from 12 segments, CPM contests from seven and SDPI from six wards. In addition to 27 independent candidates, CPI contests from one ward, WPI is in fray in three wards, while KRS and JDU are fighting poll from two wards each.
In 21 out 60 wards, the contest will be between Congress and BJP as no other political parties and independents are in fray.
Katipalla North, Panjimogaru, Panambur Bengre, Kadri Padavu, Kadri South and Bajal wards have maximum number of candidates with all wards have five candidates each in fray. While election will be held on November 12, votes will be counted on November 14.
