Mangalore: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) organized its monthly review meeting held to discuss issues on public health, income tax and appeals, education, and social justice, city project and development, and statement of accounts at conference hall on July 31, Tuesday.
The meeting commenced with the issue raised by an independent corporator Jayanthi attack on students at the Morning Mist Home Stay, where she referred RSS members as the uncultured goons, where in turn the BJP members verbally attacked the Jayanthi and referred her community as Naxals. They also shouted at Mariamma Thomas another independent corporator, who supported her.
Even after the tea break, former mayor Shankar Bhat demanded Jayanthi to apologize for her statement on RSS members. He also said that if she compares RSS with goons, then CPI (M) is considered as the Naxals and murderers. But in return Jayanthi refused to ask sorry, since she had not linked the BJP with the Sangh Parivar. He also threatened to discontinue the meeting till she asks sorry.
Jayanthi demanded an apology from the opposition for their statements, but soon there was a agreement took place between two parties and meeting continued.
Speaking on the occasion, Corporator Naveen D’Souza urged the police department and the district administration to take stern action against illegal home stays located across the city while the Corporators like Appi and Ashok said that further care must be taken to avoid such incidents since girls are not safe any more.
Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde, said that arresting Corporator Mohan Padil by the police department was not right, since it was his duty to rush to the spot of the incident in his area. He also said that filing FIRs against two journalists were also wrong, even though they had shot the video of attack before informing the police.
The opposition members of the MCC also submitted memorandum to Mayor Gulzar Banu, condemning the attack on young people at the home stay and urging to take strict action against the culprits.
Deputy Mayor Amithakala and MCC Commissioner Harish Kumar, were present for the meeting.
