Mangalore: The MCC officials have continued their raids on shops selling and using banned plastic bags. On July 27, Friday, they raided the fruit and vegetable stalls at the Central Market and seized all plastic bags of below 40 microns thickness.
The raids were in the aftermath of the recent statement made by District Minister CT Ravi that there should be a permanent ban of plastic materials below a particular thickness.
The erring shopkeepers were penalized. If some paid the penalty, some others refused to comply resulting in heated arguments.
Later, Environment Engineer Madhu said stern action would follow against those shop keepers who refused to pay the fine amount. On Friday, the MCC team collected Rs 1450 from 6 stalls and seized the banned plastic
Others in the raiding team were Health Inspector Nirmala, Health officer Yashwant, Babu Mallanna, Povappa and Karunakar.
