Mangalore : The Mangalore City Corporation Mayor Praveen announced the revised property tax rates as per the self-assessment scheme (SAS) at the press meet held at his Chamber on March 31, Thursday without the presence of the opposition leaders, said opposition leader Lancelot Pinto.
Speaking at the press meet held at Press Club on April 2, Saturday he said that the BJP ruled leaders of MCC have decided to increase the tax rates since the new rates of 15 – 30 percent will be in effect as per Section 109 (A) for every once in three years. But they have not bothered to discuss the matter or take suggestions from the opposition leaders. The rates will be burden for the public he added.
Speaking on the solid waste management he said that, the scheme of waste segregation is a good initiative. But the amounts collected for the waste as per the sq ft of the houses are not correct.
The MCC has announced the rates for the owners of houses of 1000sq. ft. and below to Rs. 10, of 1000sq.ft. – 3000sq.ft. to pay Rs. 30, and over 3000sq.ft to pay Rs. 50.
He said that there may be many people residing in a small house or it doesn’t mean that the people residing in big houses will have lot of waste. Hence the rates are not coorect he added.
We will surely stage protest to oppose the increased tax rates as per self-assessment scheme (SAS), he said.
Other opposition leaders like Harinath, Shahshidhar Hegde, Ashraf and Nagendra Kumar were present.
