Kundapur : A mentally retarded youth Ranjith Shetty (27) entered the house of his grandmother and attacked his relatives by a dagger and burgled jewels on Monday early morning.

The Police have arrested him on Tuesday while trying to sell jewels at Koteshwar.

Ranjith is the son of Laxmi, a resident of Korgi in Kundapur Taluk. On Monday early morning at about 3 am he entered the house of his grandmother Koragamma Shetty (85). When Chandramathi Shetty (38) resisted him, he entered the house forcibly and attacked Koragamma Shetty, Chandravathi Shetty and uncle Kushtappa alias Krishnayya Shetty (65) with a dagger.

He demanded the jewels of his mother. When the children of Chandravathi Shetty shouted, he threatened to kill them. Afterwards he stole jewels worth several lakh from the cupboard and also snatched the jewel worn by Koragamma and Chandramathi. He locked the front door and threw the key into a well. The house is at an isolated area.

The injured suffered for five hours. The incident came to light when a person who was coming by the house noticed the incident. He immediately admitted them to Koteshwar hospital with the help of local people. Chandramathi and Koragamma are in critical condition.

Kundapur police arrested him on Tuesday afternoon while selling 250 gram jewels at Kotesahwar junction and registered case for attempt to murder and also burglary.
