Mangalore: Tuesday, Jan.14, 2014 has two festivals in one day –Makara sankranti day by Hindu’s at Shabarimalai temple and Milad-Un-Nabi by Muslims in Mangalore Bunder area and all over the state were Muslims live. Hindus, after pennons of 40 days visit Shabarimalai hills to worship god Ayyappa and observe Makaravelakku on this day on Uttarayana begins and the sun turns from the south to the north on its access with earth.
This year it also happens to doable religious as Muslims all over Karnataka have the birth and death anniversary of Prophet Mohammed, especially in Ullal and the Arber area of Mangalore Muslims got up early at night and wet to the mosque near Azeezuddin Road for prayers, chanting of Quran and religious discourses by Movlvis in several places. Dressed in white with round caps on their heads and a neat appearance, the faithful Muslims prayed for an hour in several mosques and took out processions with dafli and music bands on the main roads near the Bunder areas.
Quran teachings learnt by heart by young and old were recited at homes and in public places by men, women and children. There was happiness and jubilation everywhere on a cold morning, who have been well trained and well versed in regard to observing such holy events.
There where crowds of elegantly dressed Muslims at the historical Eidgah of Tippu Sultan on the Light House hill, Dargha at Ullal and such other well known places all over Mangalore and other coastal regions today.
