Udupi : Various  milk producers unions and co-operative societies in the district observed a day long bundh on December 7, Friday opposing the income and service tax levied on co-operative societies. The bundh call was given by the Karnataka State Cooperative Society, Bangalore, Udupi District Cooperative Union, Karnataka State Sowhardha Samyukhtha Cooperative Nigama, Bangalore and  South Kanara Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society

The union representatives also submitted a memorandum to the state and central governments through Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr MT Reju.

Addressing a protest meet, Gopikrishna, Member of Udupi District Co-operative Union said though the co-operative societies  had 100 per cent tax free provision under Column 80 P(2)(a)(i) of the Co-operative Societies Act, they have now been forcefully brought under 80 P (4) which states that 1/3 of the profit will be payable as tax

Satish Chandra from Karnataka state cooperative society  many co-operative societies are unable to pay the tax arrears for the past three to four years which run upto Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.

A vehicle rally was also taken out from Town Hall to DC office.
