Mangaluru: Revenue Minister R.V. Deshpande on Thursday said the State Government was considering increasing the compensation amount to families affected following torrential rain.
Talking to reporters during his inspection of areas affected by rain in Mangaluru, on Thursday, Mr. Deshpande said the compensation of Rs. 1 lakh paid to each affected household was too less. The Government was considering increasing the quantum of compensation, he added.
Mr. Deshpande said State Government was ensuring that the district administration has reserve of Rs. 5 crore to handle calamity relief. He said the Government has released Rs. 3 crore each to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District administration that has seen heavy rain in the last few days.
Mr. Deshpande said the Charmadi Ghat — connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru — has been closed because of landslides. It will be opened soon after repair of the damaged stretch.
On Thursday morning, Mr. Deshpande visited houses of Anuradha and Purushottam in Bejai Anegundi that were among the many houses damaged in the city following rain on May 29. He presented cheque of Rs. 1 lakh each to them. He also met a resident of Panjimogaru who is admitted in a private hospital following fall of a portion of his house.
