Mangaluru: Congress MLA Shakunthala Shetty is all set to make her constituency ‘Smart’ by giving people free access to Wi-Fi in two major towns in her constituency. The MLA has entered an agreement with the BSNL to make Puttur, her home-town, and Vitla connected via free Wi-Fi network. With this people can access internet near bus stand, government hospital, court complex, taluk panchayat office, weekly market, women’s college and Mini Vidhan Soudha in Puttur town.
Shakunthala has set aside Rs 8 lakh from her local area development fund for the purpose for one year. While the Wi-Fi network will have four points each in two towns, 800 mobile phones can be connected at a time in each point. The unlimited data access will be available free for 15 minutes a day.
Shakunthala told that the limited access will be given to prevent misuse of the facility. “We initially planned to give free Wi-Fi access for two hours a day. But later we decided to limit the access to 15 minutes so that only those who need access for emergency purposes, can use it in public places. The survey and other technical works are complete and very soon the service will be made available in two towns,” she said.
While 6,400 people will get free Wi-Fi access in Puttur and Vitla every day, the scheme will help 1,92,000 smart phone users in a month, she said.
