Mangaluru: The Mangalore University has emerged champions at the 78th All India Inter-university Athletics Championships 2017-18 organised by the Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, on Saturday.
This is the second time that the university has won the championship.
A release from Dr Kishore Kumar, director, Department of Physical Education, Mangalore University, said the Mangalore University team won the overall championship, with 11 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals.
While the Mangalore University men’s team bagged the team championship with a tally of 116 points, the team from Panjab University, Chandigarh, was second with 48 points. The team from University of Calicut won third place with 44 points.
Elakkiya Dasan of Alva’s College emerged the fastest male athlete of the meet, winning gold in 100 and 200 metre sprints, with new meet records of 10.49 seconds and 20.92 seconds, respectively.
Ranjeet Kumar Patel from Alva’s College set a new meet record of 29:45.8 minutes in the 10,000 metre race. A new meet record of 40:83 seconds was set in the 4X100 metre men’s relay. Even in 4X400 metre men’s relay, a new meet record of 3:10:7 minutes was set. Anjela Devasta of Alva’s College has set a new meet record with 1.80 metre in high jump.
The other winners are Ranjeeth Kumar Patel (gold in half marathon), Santhosh Kumar T (gold in 400 metre hurdles, bronze in 110 metre hurdles), Haribhaksha Singh (gold in steeple chase), Arun Baby (gold in javelin throw), Sachin (silver in discuss throw), Arjun (silver in 10,000 metre race), Dheeraj (silver in Decathlon), Dharun A (silver in 400 metre race), Kumbhar Kantilal (silver in half marathon), Siddarth Mohan Naik (bronze in long jump), Vikranth (bronze in triple jump).
In women’s category, Chauhan Jyothi Jagabahudur (gold in steeple chase), K M Ritu Dhiman (gold in hammer throw), Anamika Das (silver in shot put), Abhinaya Shetty (silver high jump), Priyanka (bronze in javelin throw), Bandan Patil (bronze in 5 km walk). In 4X100 metre relay the women’s team has won bronze.
Mangalore University vice chancellor Prof K Byrappa and registrar Prof Nagendra Prakash lauded the performance of the team.
Dr M Mohan Alva, chairman, Alva’s Education Foundation too expressed his happiness at Mangalore University’s show.
Radhakrishna, Sesappa Gowda and Ramachandra were the team trainers and Praveen Kumar was the team manager.
