Mangaluru: A mob thrashed a murder accused in the presence of police for creating nuisance and inciting communal tension in Ullal on Monday night. A constable was injured in the incident when the accused tried to hit him with a wooden log.
Abdul Mutalib, 23, is an accused in the murder of fisherman Rajesh Kotian in 2016. Police said people of the area had earlier complained that Abdul was consuming ganja at public places. Residents alleged that Abdul, after securing bail in the Rajesh Kotian murder case, used to harass and trouble people in the vicinity and damage their houses and shops. For some time he had gone underground and surfaced on Monday.
Public who learnt about his presence rushed to his house where a big crowd had gathered. Police took Mutalib into custody. The restless crowd gheraoed the policemen and demanded that Abdul be handed over to them. They dragged him from their custody and thrashed him. In the meele, a constable was injured.
Abdul was treated at a private hospital and produced before the court on Tuesday. A case has been registered at Ullal police station.
