Mangalore: Has monsoon entered southern state of Kerala on the west coast? Yes. The farmers are getting busy in preliminary agricultural operations, of separating good seeds from the bad, ploughing the fields readied by organic compost manure, and welcoming rains in their regions in glee. Blankets are coming out at night.
Rains have already lashed Mangalore in coastal Karnataka at nights, as a warning, with fury of winds, lightning, and clouds-talk in April and May, and soft rains in recent days early in the morning. But fierce sunshine and heat have ruled the noon so far. But, weather soothsayers are watching the skies and the neighbours on the coast. Rains have occurred in southern parts of Bay of Bengal, Andaman Islands, and southern part of Arabian sea. There is sudden darkness sweeping the sky with black clouds here, which later push off to sea. Tomorrow is the day of reckoning for Monsoon.
Schools are opening and there is a rush of children to grab free books, uniforms, umbrellas, writing materials, even mid-day meals (or refreshments). In several schools, the books and uniforms have already been distributed. There is freshness in school activities, among women teachers and children, as in primary schools. Results have separated the talented learners from the dull and dumb ones. New challenges in learning, teaching and spread of education, have cropped up. Even tourists are getting ready for monsoon baths and beach tourism on coastal areas and riversides.
Monsoon is never dull or in active low lying areas stand threatened and drainage systems in towns invite dumps of mud and garbage. Some pools appear on roads neglected in summer and not repaired health is another area of enquiry. The monsoon is here and beware!
