17.06.10 Mangalore : Widespread danger of collapsing houses on the eroded seaside from Ullal (Karnataka border with Kerala) to Udupi and beyond is staring in the faces of citizens living near river and seas, be they Mogaveeras bringing fish on merchants having shops near the bunder, or schools constructed for local children. The regular Monsoon has assented itself from 10th June onwards, with Cyclones moving away and rains coming in fast driven by winds. There is less of thunder and lightning in the air, but rains fall heavily during the day. There is ferocity on the beaches and even sturdy boatmen would think twice before taking their mechanized boats, launches, or country boats out into the sea for a catch perhaps the ban on fishing during rainy season, to allow fingerlings (young fish groups) to grow into large fish in size by September, has not come into force and DC may be contemplating on the same. But he has also to think of paralysis of normal life near the Coast to those crossing over to an island like Bengre, or to the beach across the river waters in flood, due to collapse of houses falling of trees, eroding of stonewalls, washing away of minor bridges and paths leading to homes and factories, in open areas susceptible to winds and heavy rains. It is useless to count how many houses and trees fell, how many were taken away by waves, how much cracks have appeared on the mud or stronger houses before they give no shelter to families. Politicians, MLAs and leaders make a habit of visiting the areas and doing nothing, hoping that executives will face the situation. There are Hindus, Muslims and Christians in the Coastal sides with just a house and little else, perhaps bank loans to repay. The district administration needs to wake up and save them.
