Mangaluru : A proposal to install a musical fountain with laser show at Kadri Park, the largest lung space in the city, appears to be heading towards realisation as the State government has approved a Rs. 5 crore project to this effect.
J.R. Lobo, MLA, Mangaluru City South, told that the project would come up at the old deer park which is part of the Kadri Park. Bids would be invited shortly for its construction through the Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA).
The MLA, who was formerly Commissioner of the Mangaluru City Corporation, said an amphitheatre (open air seating arrangement to view musical fountain show), landscape and compound wall for the area, would be part of the project.
He said the plan was to make the road in between the old deer park and main Kadri Park as a “commercial street” with a series of stalls on one side and parking facility on the other side. People, mainly tourists, should be able to purchase art materials and local products, he said.
In addition, Mr. Lobo said that a facelift to the Kadri Park was also being planned. Its entrance would be made attractive with a new, wide gate with artistic features. Mini fountains would be constructed inside the park and a mini park for specially abled children is also part of the plan.
Mr. Lobo said he would use the MLA’s fund and donations from sponsors to give a facelift to the place opposite the deer park. This will not be part of the Rs. 5-crore project.
He said that discussions were on about constituting a society for maintaining the entire Kadri Park on the lines of a society that is managing the Pilikula Nisargadhama. When constituted, the society comprise a devoted team to supervise its maintenance, and would strive towards collecting funds for future development projects.
The Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada should be the head of the proposed society. Currently, Kadri Park is being maintained by the Horticulture Department.
