Mangalore: An anti-dowry convention among Muslims? Yes, the Al-Wafa Charitable trust inaugurated it at the Town Hall on Wednesday, to change the mindset of Muslim youths, on dowry demands and the tragic developments flowing from them in society.
Mangalore Qazi, Twaqa Ahmed Musliyar in his address asked the Muslims to abolish the bad practice. He referred to Arabian Gulf countries, where ‘Mahar’ (gold or cash given by the bridegroom to marry a bride) brought sufferings to many a bridegroom. A nuptial bank was formed but that did not solve the issue, he said.
But dowry practised here in India brought misery and problems in the lives of marriageable girls.
He told rich people not to spend lavishly on marriages but to make it a simple ceremony.
