Mangalore : The Islamic Cultural Centre based in Kankanady, Mangalore conducted a press meet on Wednesday (today) at 10 Am in a Mosque Takva hall near Mahaveera (Pumpwell) circle in city.
Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobaker Musliyar, general secretary, All India Sunni Ulema Federation, was present on the occasion. P.M. Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal (Udupi Kazi), Abu Sufiyan H. Ibrahim Madhani (state Sunni Youth Association leader), Abdul Rawoof Puthige (chairman, Talent Research Foundation in city), Usman Haji Mithur (Treasurer), Hyder Parthipady (Joint Secretary), S.M. Rasheed Haji (Muthavalli, Masjid Takhta) were also present in the press meet.
The speakers were unanimous in their opinion that Dowry has assumed a major trouble making role in the backward, poor and illiterate Muslim Community in the coastal area, despite there being schools and colleges, a strong public opinion against dowry, and the need to build a strong society based on mutual help in economic activities. The Dowry fire has taken many women, and young girls in its insatiable flames as victims. Marriage is a holy act of mutual faith and at the basis of an expanding society. During matrimony the bride’s conduct and learning, as also the faith she follows should be looked at, and not the money she may bring with her. Dowry menace has made a costly trade engagement out of the social system of marriage based on mutual faith, not money. This perversion of marriage into a deal should be discouraged by all, said Aboobaker Musliyar in his talk with pressmen.
Muslims are waking up to the system of a social marriage for stabilizing society rather than to harass girl’s parents for more and more money.
