NAGA (Serpent) Panchami on the Thursday in Kudupu and other Temples
Mangalore; Thursday being a general holiday on account of Nagarapanchami, which heralds seasonal festivities to come in shravan month and monsoon season, people thronged for a Snake worship at various Nagabanas in city, near every hoary Temple as at Mangaladevi, Uma Maheshwar Temple (near car street), Kadri Manjunatha Temple, and especially, at Kudupu Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple on Gururpuru road, after Kulshekar,today. It is one of the celebrated Snake Temples on West coast for Tuluva devotees and all Hindus.
At early morning Sunrise at 6am, people bathed at home or in rivers, dressed in new clothes come to the Temple to after tender coconuts, plantains, Agarbathies, fruits and flowers to the Snake God. Some devotees brought popcorn as snakes eat it, and diluted milk to bathe the various snake images kept in the Temple and Nagabana (a separate area kept for snakes to live).
Abhishekas (pouring ) of water, milk, honey, tender, coconut water, and Panchamritam, were performed by priests to the snake gods on stones under giant peepul trees.
Special Pujas and presents were offered to Snakes by childless couples to have babies.
Public feast (Anna Santarpana)is arranged in many Temples, also Kudupu, for devotees at noon.
The Snake is adorned as an alive ornament on Lord Shiva, and as a bed by Mahavishnu (also known as Nagabharana, and Ananatha Shayana, respectively), according to Hindu Scriptures.
