New Delhi: The Congress has asked the Election Commission to provide more security to actor-turned-politician Nagma, the party’s candidate in Uttar Pradesh. She has complained of harassment and unruly crowds while campaigning in Meerut, the constituency from where she is contesting the general election.
In a letter to the Election Commission, the Congress has said that the “crowds she is attracting require special attention of the local administration to maintain order.”
Last week, Nagma slapped a man who allegedly groped her at a public meeting.
“I may not return to Meerut if this happens again,” she told media.
The 39-year-old has reportedly hired bouncers and guards to keep her safe.
She was also manhandled by Congress legislator Gajraj Singh, who grabbed her face and allegedly kissed her at an event two weeks ago. The incident was caught on camera. Nagma was seen removing his hand and walking off angrily, without addressing the crowd.
The visuals were aired repeatedly on channels and websites but no action was taken against the Congress leader. This spurred allegations that the party did not want to displease a legislator who claims a strong following and can damage its chances of winning in Meerut.
