Gujarat: The key accused in 2006 Aurungabad arms haul case, Abu Jundal, along with six others, was awarded life imprisonment by a special MCOCA court on Tuesday. The court had declared Jundal and 11 others guilty in the case last week.

The court had accepted the prosecution’s plea that the accused were involved in a plan to assasinate then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Pravin Togadia.

Judge SL Anekar announced the quantum of punishment in a packed court room. Two convicts were sentenced to 14 years of jail, while three others were jailed for 8 years. Eight other accused in the case, however, have been acquitted.

Abu Jundal alias Zabiudin Ansari, was an Indian Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist. Jundal was also one of the key conspirators in the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai and the handler of the 10 terrorists, including Ajmal Kasab, who came to India via sea.

A resident of Beed district in Maharashtra, Jundal had reportedly left for Pakistan to receive terror training in the early 2000s. Later he started recruiting cadre for LeT. Jundal is an accused in several other terror incidents across the country such as 2006 Ahmedabad railway station blast, 2010 German-Bakery blast case in Pune in wich 17 people had died.
