Mangalore: The 23rd National Road Safety Week Commenced on Tuesday, January 9 with an inauguration by Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, at the premises of St. Aloysius’ College grounds.
A rally started from Central Nehru Maidan and ended in PUC grounds on Light house hill, to mark the beginning of the public event.
A large number of boys from National Social Service, National Cadet Corps, Scouts and guides, and representatives of other Organisations, participated in the March.
Delivering the inaugural address, the Dharmasthal Dharmadhikari Dr.Veerendra Heggade said, Indians tend to ignore traffic laws, putting lives in great risks. Awareness of road safety cannot be huddled into only a week, but these campaigns need to be conducted all through the year.
Dr. Heggade dwelt on medias’ responsibility through newspapers/TV/reports to observe road safety, especially among children at school. They should know why accidents happened daily, and people are injured or killed.
Traffic rules should teach them how to walk on roads, or cross them. A book on Road Safety by Dr. M.K. Dharani was released on this occasion. Dignitaries were present along with RTO(DK), C. Mallikarjuna at the venue.
