Mangalore : Human Rights and Anti harassment organisation general secretary of Yuvaraj Jain, said recently Naveen Poojary (43) was dead in the Mangalore jail due to the police negligence.
Speaking at the press meet held at Press Club on June 8, Saturday, he said that Urwa station police officials have taken Naveen Poojari (43) of Shaktinagar, who was roaming in a drunken state from Thokottu Over Bridge into custody on May 20, 2013.
Jain said that Naveen was who was suffering from high fever had been taken to Wenlock Hospital for treatment on June 1 and the blood test was done on June 2. Though his blood test report was negative he was taken to court on June 3 and extended the judicial custody. But on the same night at 12.30 he was again diagnosed with high fever. Though he was rushed to Wenlock Hospital, he was declared as dead by the doctors.
After the incident the police were silent as they finished their given work. Naveen’s ill father and mother, elder sister and her daughter, who are dependent on Naveen’s earning, were still waiting for his arrival in their damaged house. The police have not even felt the necessity to inform about Naveen’s death in custody to his family, but they came to know about the incident from local and media.
Jain also said that in spite of the incident taken place in jail, none of the local ministers have visited the family or sanctioned any compensation for his death.
