Moodbidri : Residents of Niddodi in Kallamundkur Gram Panchayat limits which is in Mangalore taluk and will join the newly framed Moodbidri taluk,  is in the grips of fear after media reports said the government proposed a 4000 mega watts ultra mega thermal power project in the vilalge.

If the UPCL thermal plant at Ellur which generates 1200 mw of electricity needs 2000 acres of land, the Niddodi power project may need around 4000 acres of land.

Ironically 85 per cent of land is agricultural land in Niddodi and majority of people rely on agriculture.The project if implemented is expected to wreak havoc on the lives of the people here.The project  is all likely to pose damnger not only to Niddodi but also  nearby villages including Tenkamijar, Badagamijar, Mucharu as well as Kateel, Kinnigoli, Edapadavu.

The Matrabhoomi Samrakshana Samithi here which was successful in averting the setting up of a company which wanted to tap the boxite resources in the area and also the 2011 Suvarna Corridor Project, is now  geared up to fight against the proposed ultra mega thermal power project.

The Samithi oficve bearers who held  an emergency meetign resolved to fight against the project and put up a united front.
Joachim Koreya, Preisdent of the Kallamundkur gram panchayt said  Niddodi which  has 2553 acres of land has 85 per cent of agricultural land and said the village would fight till the finish against the project.

Several prominent personalities including Bhasker Devasya,  Subhaschandra Padival, ZP member Eshwar Kateel, journalist Kiran Manjanbailu and  representatives of various organisations  attended the meeting  and strongly opposed the project.
The meeting expressed anguish against the KIADB for pretending ignorance regarding the project.

Meanwhile, the Moodbidri MLA Abhayachandra Jain who said he came to know about the mega project through media, added he was strongly against the project.
