Mangalore: 70 post-graduate students were conferred various degrees in the first (annual) convocation of Nitte University headed by Vinay Hegde as Chancellor, on Monday, August 22, at Nitte Village near Karkala originally now with a campus at Mangalore in Deralakatte.
43 masters of Pharmacy, 24 nursing, 3 pharmacy students obtained their degree certificates. A doctor of science degree was conferred upon Frankfurt (German) University chairman of Oral Surgery department, Dr.Georg H.Netwig, but in absentia.
Addressing the graduates, Chancellor Hedge stated that education was a continuing process all through life.
Union minister M.Veerappa Moily was not present to deliver the convocation address. The registerar (Rajshekar) read out his speech.
The address informed that India had 450 Universities and 22,500 colleges. 34,000 decors (MBBS) and 13,500 post graduates pass out annually. Only 1000 super specialists pass every year. Yet India faces shortage of health workers and facilities. Dr.Shantharam Shetty , VC was present, with members of various faculties.
