Mangalore : New Mangalore Port (NMP) handled a record 2 lakh tons of LPG this July, the highest quantity of LPG handled in one month in the history of NMP. The port has broken its old record of handling 1.86 tons this March.
The leading Indian port for handling LPG, NMP has handled 7.13 lakh tons of LPG in 2010 – 11 to July 2011 as against the 5.77 lakh tons it handled the previous year. The number of container vessels calling in at the port has increased, enabling the port to handle 17,262 TEUs this year as against 14,676 TEUs handled during the previous year, which means a growth of 17 percent.
The port handled 23 heavy consignments for MRPL, the maximum weight being 777 metric tons. The cargo was imported from South Korea in a special vessel called M. V. Svenja on Aug 1 and sailed out on Wednesday.
NMPT Chairman P. Tamilvanan has expressed gratefulness to all the labourers and employees in the port, trade union leaders, officers, and users and has acknowledged their role in the port’s success.
