Mangaluru : Protests against the Nethravati diversion project continued, with students taking out a procession and staging a street play at Surathkal on Monday.
Students of Govindadasa Pre-University College, volunteers of National Service Scheme (NSS) and members of Sanketa, Mangaluru, participated in the protest. It was aimed at creating awareness about the project among the people.
Members of Sahyadri Sanchaya, a group of green activists, distributed handouts ‘Yettinahole Uttara Needi’ to people. The convener of sanchaya Dinesh Holla, explained the importance of the Western Ghats and the need to protect it from any damage. He said that all the streams originating at the ghats were important and measures to divert them were dangerous.
The activists would distribute handouts at Bantwal and B.C. Road on Tuesday.
The sanchaya has convened a meeting of representatives of professional associations in the city on Saturday to garner support against the project.
Meanwhile, farmers have called off their proposed protest against the project at B.C. Road on September 15. Instead they would join activists at Uppinangady on the same day to block the Mangaluru-Bengaluru national highway from 10 a.m., he said.
