Udupi: The police on Monday managed to arrest a man for allegedly vandalizing St Anthony’s statue at Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva in the district.

Sources say that Benedict D’Souza (57) damaged the statue in a drunken stupor.

It is said that on Sunday, Benedict picked up a fight with some migrants. He then came to the Church to pray and in a drunken stupor, attempted to change places of the statues and in the meantime, St Antony’s statue fell and broke into pieces.

Benedict’s wife and daughter are said to be residing abroad.
