Udupi : A person identified as Muhammed Haris has been booked by the traffic police on the charges of stopping police jeep and obstructing policemen from discharging their duties.
Meanwhile, the DSP has clarified that the cops were in uniform when checking vehicles and imposing fines on erring vehicles along the fish market road here on Thursday September 12.
“The traffic police sub-inspector and staff were wearing uniforms when checking vehicles, registering cases, and collecting fine. A total of 11 cases were registered there. At that time, a bike rider not wearing helmet came that way and was stopped. He then called someone on phone and within a short time thereafter, another person (later identified as Muhammed Haris) arrived to the location, stood in front of the police jeep, and began shouting at the police for registering cases there, asking the sub-inspector to step out of the jeep,” officials of the office of the superintendent of police said in a release.
Soon many people gathered at the spot and therefore, the town police station was informed, informed the police.
“Two policemen from there came to assist the traffic police. One among the two had discharged duty the previous night and was again posted on duty on Thursday night. Therefore he was in plainclothes. He also tried to pacify the person who continued to shout. But the man also threatened the said policeman. He then drove the motor bike away, with the person who came earlier seated in the pillion. Police had not committed any dereliction of duty there,” clarified the office.
