Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Traffic police have reversed the one-way rule on Panje Mangesha Rao (P.M. Rao) Road and Sharavu Ganapathi Temple Road, both connecting the Ganapathi High School Road and Karnad Sadashiva Rao Road on an experimental basis.
Vehicles from Hampanakatte via G.H.S. Road, had to take a right turn near Srinivasa Hotel to P.M. Rao Road to reach K.S.R. Road. Similarly, those from K.S.R. Road heading to Hampanakatte had to take a right turn before Excel Mischief Mall to Sharavu Road to join G.H.S. Road.
The system was causing confusion as traffic had to criss-cross, particularly near Srinivasa Hotel, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manjunatha Shetty. Also, vehicles from Hampanakatte had to wait at another signal near Mischief Mall to allow vehicles bound towards Sharavu Road.
With the new system, vehicles from Hampanakatte towards K.S.R. Road have to move till the end of G.H.S. Road to join Sharavu Road, take a right turn and thereafter take a free left towards K.S.R. Road. Similarly, vehicles from K.S.R. Road will now take the right turn to P.M. Road after Mischief Mall and join G.H.S. Road. This has considerably avoided the confusion, he noted.
Though the reversal plan was on the cards for a few months, it could be implemented only after GHS Road was partially concreted. Some civil works need to be finished on GHS Road after its concreted portion between ICICI Bank and Sharavu Road to reduce the gradient, after which vehicular movement will become more smooth, he said.
Meanwhile, the police have made the Jewellery Lane that connects G.H.S. Road and Car Street Cross Road a two-way. The road is likely to be widened after the polls. Sharavu Road will continue to remain one-way between Temple Square on Car Street to K.S.R. Road, Mr. Shetty added.
