Mangaluru : Due to the unprecedented hike in onion prices in the country, the city has imported 50 tonnes of onions from Turkey. These onions were offloaded at Mangaluru Bunder on Tuesday, December 3.
At present, the merchants at the market are not expecting the price to come down as they currently selling onions at Rs. 100 – 120 per kg.
The onions that are grown in Turkey and other nations are quite big in size when compared to Indian grown onions.
However, the arrival of the new onions in the local market has subsided and many workers, farmers who are dependent on the onion market are facing a hard time due to the price hike.
Apparently, the middlemen are the ones who are controlling the price at the moment and getting benefits out of the market.
