Mangaluru : Nupur Sharma, joint coordinator, BJP National Yuva Morcha, alleged here on Monday that the Congress and other Opposition parties were justifying what she called the “anti-national” activities of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Addressing the media, she said, “Those who are making seditious statements are anti-nationals and they may choose to quit India. As per the legal perspective, translation of the word ‘sedition’ is ‘treason’.”
Ms. Sharma said that the Opposition parties were justifying the anti-national speeches and slogans raised by Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) members as dissent.
“There is a difference between ‘dissent’ and ‘sedition’. As per Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, making attempts to excite disaffection towards the government even through words is a punishable offence,” she said.
“Those students wanted destruction of the nation and freedom for Kashmir. However, those political leaders are spreading false propaganda by projecting sedition as dissent in the name of freedom of speech and expression. Shouting slogans for Afzal Guru and for ‘Azad Kashmir’ cannot come under freedom of speech and expression,” she said.
