Mangaluru : A person picked up by personnel of jurisdictional Bajpe police station on charges of consuming liquor on Malavoor dam with three others, succumbed to a heart attack at the hospital where he was rushed for treatment, late on Sunday. Police identified the person as Melwin John, 39, resident of Balpugudde in Kavoor. City police chief M Chandra Sekhar has ordered an internal inquiry in to the death that DCP (Law and Order) K M Shantharaju will conduct.
City police top brass said the jurisdictional police picked up Melwin and others from Malavoor dam around 10.30pm on receipt of information about their presence there. PCR van from the police station reached the place and took the four to police station and informed the family of one of the person and brother of that person came to the police station. The police personnel were enquiring and taking down their names and address of the four in the meanwhile.
During this time, Melwin seated on a chair in the front hall of the police station collapsed holding his chest around 11.20pm. Police and others immediately shifted Melwin to a private hospital in the city and admitted him there at 11.45pm where the doctors declared him dead. Lawrence, the brother of Melwin who lodged a complaint of unnatural death with police stated that Melwin was suffering from heart problem previously and this could explain the incident.
Sanjeev M Patil, DCP (crime and traffic) said the judicial magistrate will conduct the inquest. “The internal inquiry that the commissioner of police has ordered is routine step in such incidents,” he said, adding the police understanding is that Melwin, who was at the police station for bare minimum time when the details of the four was being collected, died enroute the hospital. Melwin’s family has confirmed his precarious health condition, he added.
