Mangaluru: As compensation to the farmers for the loss in crops the high court has ordered Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to pay Rs 32,84,453.
As four farmers had filed a written petition regarding the crop loss due to MCC’s water purifying unit at Tumbe, the court has passed this order.
MCC had constructed a water purifying unit at Tumbe to supply the drinking water to the Mangaluru city. The filtered back wash which was filled with sediment mud was flowed to the fertile land of farmers. The crops were damaged due to this development and farmers had filed a plea in high court.
The survey was conducted by revenue, agricultural and horticultural department officials. The reports were submitted to Mangaluru and Bantwal assistant commissioners as well as Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner. The compensation amount was fixed by the revenue department in a meeting held on August 10.
After examining the reports and receiving directions from the high court DC ordered MCC to pay the compensation amount to the farmers.
After the order passed by DC, MCC in its meeting on August 30 has decided to give the money after the completion of formalities. And it is also decided to store the sediment mud in sumps or tanks to find an alternative way to dispose it, so that the problem should not occur again.
