Mangaluru: After the scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, people rushed into the banks to exchange their present notes into new 500 and 2000 rupee notes, on Thursday.
Crowd of people reached the road at State Bank India branch near DC office. Though the crowd was less in the morning when the banking hour begun, but it increased gradually and reached the peak level by afternoon.
Most of the bank branched witnessed the same situation in the city. Some were eagerly waiting to receive the new 500 and 2000 notes and they were standing in the queue for their turn to come.
A truck which was full of new notes visited all the banks and distributed the money on Wednesday, it is gathered. ATM machines will be filled with new notes by Friday and will be available for the public from Friday afterwards only.
To avoid the untoward incidents during the note exchange and with the wake of Tippu Jayanthi tight security was provided in all the banks.
