Mangaluru: The residents of Thannirbavi appealed to City Police Commissioner T R Suresh to set up a police outpost at Thannirbavi. “The youths and tourists who visit Thannirbavi beach behave indecently,” said the residents.
Corporator Raghuveer Panambur, Thannirbavi Youth Sports Club President Naveen Suvarna, Mahila Mandala President Bharathi Suvarna, and others met the Commissioner on Sunday and said, “When a group of youth (boys and girls), on Saturday evening, were behaving indecently on the beach, we had questioned them, which led to the exchange of words. There was no assault. In the melee, they were only pushed. Later, the issue was sorted out amicably and they left the venue. However, within a few hours, case was registered against the local residents,” the delegation explained.
There are instances of local residents handing over the youths during a scuffle at the beach. “We feel awkward when the tourist behave indecently on the beach. We do not wish our children to watch all those indecent acts,” said Bharathi Suvarna.
Residents Srilatha and Naveen Suvarna said “Dacoity and theft cases have been booked against the locals in connection with the Saturday’s incident. If cases are registered against local youth for objecting to the indecent behaviour, we women will unitedly oppose such indecent acts. All the weeds and bushes in Thannirbavi should be cleared. CCTV cameras should be installed.”
Speaking to residents, City Police Commissioner said that he will discuss the issue of clearing the weeds in Thannirbavi beach and also installing CCTV cameras with the officials from the Tourism Department and Mangaluru City Corporation.
Further, he said under MLALAD of MLA J R Lobo, “A sum of Rs 10 lakh has been released for installing CCTV cameras on main roads. In case of necessity, CCTV cameras will be installed at a few locations on the beach. The jurisdictional police personnel will be asked to keep a vigil at the beachside. The police in civil dress will be deputed on duty.”
