Mangalore: Dr M Veerappa Moily, Union Law Minister inaugurated a two day UGC sponsored National Seminar on “Human Rights – Changing Trends and Challenges in India” at St Agnes College on September 23, Friday.
The seminar was organized by the Department of Political Science and Human Rights Education Cell of St Agnes College.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Veerappa Moily said that there is nothing more great than honouring human rights. The person may forgo food, but not human dignity hence one must preserve it.
He also said that it is the right of every citizen of the country to preserve their human rights and dignity. If the society shows inferiority and discrimination among the people, then it is unequal society.
When celebrating human rights, we must work to fulfill the need and not to fulfill the greed. Apart from the academic lesson, the colleges must teach children how to live in a society which is comfortable to everyone, he said.
Today, we have enough laws, court and officials, but it does not serve any purpose. Human Rights law is the indicator of good governance. Government is machinery, but if it must be ruled by good people, e added.
Chief Guest Hon’ble Naadoja Dr. Justice S. R. Nayak said that economical and political rise in the society are dead letters and useless. Today 48 percent of people are deprived from basic necessities. There are crores of people without water, nutritious food and shelter.
Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, member of Central Law Commission delivered the key note address on the occasion.
