Mangalore : The story of Dadasaheb Phalke, a pioneering spirit of film production in India, has been captured in Marathi as “Harishchandrachi Factory” by director Paresh Mokashi with Nandu Madhav playing the role of Phalke Dhonduraj in it.
It opens in 1911 when Phalke gives up a press job, sees a Hollywood movie and gets inspired to lay down his life for cinema and film-making ventures. Mokashi’s idea of making such a film is novel and laudable.
Phalke has no supporters, only critics who think he is a fool in making films. But even a failing eye sight does not deter the pioneer film producer. He goes to London to learn filmcraft.
On return, he ropes in friends and artistes and makes the first film “Raja Harischandra” under handicaps and hurdles chasing him. Mokashi traces Phalke’s footsteps in his current film, now shown in Mangalore in a Film Viewers’ society. Some of the scenes are quite good and nostalgic, old Mumbai and London scenes are captured very well. Music by Narendra Bhide is pleasing.
This Film in Marathi will be shown by Sahamata Fil Society at Shodaya Building Balmata on Sunday 28 th Novembe at 6 p.m as part of thier monthly screeninin event.
