New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has a new look. The news on two key economic portfolios – Murli Deora is the new Minister for Corporate Affairs; Jaipal Reddy becomes Oil Minister. Kamal Nath, in a surprise move, gets Urban Development portfolio.
CP Joshi, who was Minister for Rural Development, replaces Kamal Nath and has Jitin Prasada as his minister of state.
Praful Patel, who was expected to be promoted to Cabinet rank, has been elevated but given Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises instead. Vayalar Ravi, the minister for Overseas Indian Affairs will hold additional charge of Civil Aviation.
New ministers are sworn in at Rashtrapati Bhawan Today. Among those taking their place in the ranks of Cabinet ministers are Salman Khursheed and Sriprakash Jaiswal. Khursheed gets his promotion and moves to Water Resources, with additional charge of Minority Affairs. And Shriprakash Jaiswal keeps coal and is elevated.
Ajay Maken is given independent charge as Minister of State of Sports. MS Gill is Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation.
KV Thomas, a prominent Christian leader in Kerala, has independent charge of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Beni Prasad Yadav from UP, is the new minister is MoS with independent charge of Steel.
KC Venugopal from Kerala, Ashwini Kumar from Punjab are new ministers of state. Ashwani Kumar is junior minister for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs, Science and Technology and Earth Sciences. KC Venugopal is in the Power ministry.
Kapil Sibal stays as Telecom Minister. He will also retain his Human Resources Development portfolio.
