Beltangady : Police on April 20, Sunday arrested a woman and remanded to judicial custody for torturing her five-year-old daughter.

Reportedly, Muhammed Shafi and his wife, Fauzia have been accused of torturing and beating to their daughter, Fahima with a cudgel and inflicting bruises and wounds on her knees, hands, face, nose and ears.

After the criminal complaints registered against the couple, Muhammed Shafi is said to be absconding.

It is learnt that the couple was residing in a rented residential accommodation owned by Rubiya from a month. Within few days of shifting into the rented house, Shafi was allegedly assaulted by the members of an organization and also got admitted after filing the complaint to the local police. But after he was booked for child abuse, he is said to be absconding.

Shafi used to torture since Fahima is not his biological daughter and was second husband of Fauzia, who indirectly supported Shafi in the torture.

Recently, SDPI president Akbar, and district level leader Hyder Neersal, had visited Shafi’s home and warned about the ordeal of the child, as she revealed the torture she faced by Shafi on daily basis. The members then admitted the girl to a hospital.

Later the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission and child welfare department officials visited the girl who is taking treatment at private hospital in Puttur.
