Mangaluru: In order to discipline erring bus drivers and conductors in the city, members of bus owners association on Monday began a week-long campaign. The initiative comes in the wake of city police commissioner T R Suresh received many complaints against the bus drivers and conductors during his phone-in programme.
Suresh took up the issue with the Canara Bus Owners Association president Rajavarma Ballal and Dakshina Kannada district Bus Owners Association president Aziz Parthipady. The bus owners along with the police monitored the buses and the behaviour of their workers at various bus stops including the ones at Light House Hill, Lady Hill Circle and State Bank.
The main complaints against the bus workers included not stopping at designated stops, not issuing tickets, taking alternate routes to escape traffic snarls and competition between buses, said police commissioner T R Suresh. A similar programme had been conducted last year after which a change was witnessed among the bus workers. However, with passage of time, they went back to their old ways.
