Mangaluru: Plain-clothes police will patrol the beaches to ensure that tourists do not engage in “indecent activities”.
Recently, there was an incident at Tannirbhavi when some local youths objected to, what they described as, indecent behaviour by tourists.
Residents of Tannirbhavi and surrounding areas, including area Councillor Raguveer Panambur, met City Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh on Sunday with a plea to open a police outpost at Tannirbhavi.
Mr. Suresh told that he assured the residents regarding deployment of police personnel in mufti.
Closed circuit television cameras too will be installed on the main road as well as select stretches on the beach.
He urged residents to alert the police as and when they notice any such behaviour, and not to take law into their hands.
The residents said hundreds of families reside in the locality, and they feel embarrassed by the behaviour of some of the visitors. Many times, residents informed the police; but such activities continued, they rued.
A few months ago, the authorities of New Mangalore Port Trust not only erected a compound wall abutting the Main Road, but also installed a gate on the way leading to the northern tip of Tannirbhavi Beach. They claimed that thick vegetation and tree grove on the beach were being used as a cover for visiting couple.
