Udupi: Udupi Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi stated district police has commenced measures against drug peddlers in order to eradicate drug menace.
He stated this during a phone-in programme, conducted at SP’s office that the district police have been organising awareness programmes and rallies to create awareness on the ill-effects of drugs’ consumption. As many as 47 drug addicts have been arrested along with 14 drug peddlers.
The police will interact with drug control department to collect details of synthetic and banned drugs available in the district.
According to SP Nimbagri 11 cases had been reported under NDPS (Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act in 2016, 49 cases in 2017 and as many as 91 cases until 2018. After the previous phone in-programme conducted on August 3, 49 Matka cases have been registered and 51 persons had been arrested. 13 gambling cases had been registered and 90 persons have been arrested so far.
Three were arrested for selling illicit liquor: A total of 99 cases had been registered under COTPA, 69 for drunken driving, 239 for shrill horns, 156 cases for using mobile while riding/driving, 1478 for riding without helmets, 73 cases for over speeding and 4292 cases
To a query, the SP informed that eight cases had been registered in connection with clashes that took place during the bandh call given by Congress and other parties in
A total of 22 complaints were redressed during the phone-in programme.
When a resident from Shankarapura complained about the increase in Matka incidents in his area, the SP promised to initiate action against such illegal activities.
Two residents expressed concern over the safety of bridge due to increased movement of heavy trucks on Brahmavar-Barkur stretch.
The SP immediately instructed his officers to take necessary action. He was also informed about the ruckus created by drunkards at a bar near Tallur.
