Mangaluru: Taking their cue from the Shivamogga police, who have made a prominent road as a ‘no hawking zone’, the City Police are set to survey areas where they can have such zones.

Following a call regarding problems caused to motorists because of street vendors on the road between Rao and Rao Circle and Clock Tower Junction during the weekly phone-in programme on Friday, Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh asked his personnel to study the way Shivamogga Police have implemented ‘no hawking zone’ in the two-kilometre road in Gandhi Bazar area.

Mr. Suresh said the Shivamogga police have moved street vendors to interior roads that has been declared as hawking areas.

“The civic body has created facilities on these roads to enable vendors sell their products five years ago. But vendors had refused to move. After trying several alternatives, the Shivamogga police have declared Gandhi Bazar area, an old marketing place, a no hawking zone a week ago,” Mr. Suresh said.

Mr. Suresh asked Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manjunath Shetty to explore creation of ‘no hawking zones” in the city.

There were several complaints on haphazard parking of city buses. A caller said the city buses were hindering traffic movement by stopping their vehicles outside the space earmarked for bus stops to pick up passengers at Kodical Cross, Lalbagh and Kottara Chowki.

Mr. Suresh directed the traffic police to book cases by observing footage of traffic surveillance cameras.

A caller from Dongarakeri said police should consider moving the bus stop on the K.S. Rao Road a little further towards the Navabharath Circle to avoid traffic block at the K.S. Rao Road-V.T. Road junction.

A caller from Capitanio complained against conductors of buses on Route No. 61 and 10 A for collecting more fare from children. A caller from Padil wanted more city buses between Mulky and Haleyangady between 7 p.m .and 8 pm.

A caller from Nantoor asked the city police to close at the earliest the big pot hole near the Nantoor Junction that was hindering traffic movement. There were complaints of haphazard parking near Kadri Mallikatta market, Karangalpady market and Kottara Chowki.
