Mangalore : Praveen has been elected as Mayor of Mangalore and Geetha Nayak as deputy mayor at the Mayor’s election held at Mangalore City Corporation on February 28, Monday.
The election for the post of mayor and deputy mayor of Mangalore was held in two processes. Both Praveen and Geetha Nayak won by 34 votes and elected as the fourteenth mayor, while their opponent Appi and Mamatha Shenoy 21 votes and missed the turn.
This year, the post of mayor of Mangalore is reserved for backward classes Candidate and that of deputy Mayor is reserved for the women candidate. Accordingly, Praveen has been selected for the post of Mayor for this year.
The term of the current Rajani Dugganna and Deputy Mayor Rajendra Kumar are over and Praveen and Geetha Nayak take charge as the Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively on February 28, 2011 and render service till February 27, 2012.
Out of the total of 60 corporators of 60 wards, 35 are BJP corporators, 20 congress corporators, 1 JDS Corporator, 1 CPIM, 1 independent corporator and two other corporator of no party, the candidates received only 55 votes since Jyothi Jayaprakash of Independent and Harish of BJP were absent during the election process.
Speaking on the occasion, newly elected Mayor Praveen said that I will work under the guidance of MLA and other authorities. At present the city corporation has received the second place for cleanliness and further will work to maintain and take it to the top position, he said.
Deputy Mayor Geetha Nayak said that I will work to maintain the reputation of post. She also urged the people’s support of Mangalore to make the city clean and beautiful.
MCC Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash, Additional Regional Commissioner M Manjunath Nayak, former Mayor Rajani Dugganna and former deputy mayor Rjendra Kumar were present.
