Mangaluru : Premananda Shetty, the corporator of Mangladevi ward. was elected as the mayor and Sumangala Rao of the Kunjatbail ward as deputy mayor of of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) second term of BJP ruling.
They defeated the Congress candidates, Anil Kumar and Jacintha Vijay Alfred, by 46-14 votes.
Election officer Prakash, additional deputy commissioner M J Roopa and MCC deputy commissioner Santhosh conducted the election on Tuesday March 2.
Premananda Shetty from BJP secured 46 votes while Anil Kumar from Congress secured 14 votes.
Sumangala Rao from BJP garnered 46 votes while Jacintha Alfred from Congress secured 14 votes. The SDPI corporators remained neutral.
The MCC has a total of 60 wards. The BJP has 44 corporators whereas the opposition Congress has 14. Two corporators are from SDPI.
MLAs Vedavyasa Kamath and Dr Bharath Y Shetty were present. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and MLC B M Farooq were absent. Two SDPI corporators remained neutral.
The term of the office of mayor and the deputy mayor is one year.
