Mangaluru : The principal of University College, Hampankatta, has served a show cause notice to three Muslim girl students, for conducting a press conference and condemning the college’s decision to ban hijabs.
Three Muslim girl students, along with others, held a press conference here on Friday, opposing the hijab ban in University College, and demanded that the rule be withdrawn at the earliest.
It is said, Gousiya and two other girls had conducted a press conference during the class hours. The students are also not attending classes. Gousiya was given the notice in person on Monday, while two other girls who are not attending classes, have been sent the notice by post.
“They have to reply within three days, after receiving the notice. Based on their reply, we will take action,” Principal said. The notice states that the students have brought down the reputation of the college, by giving statements against the college and its principal.
The principal said that out of 44 Muslim girl students, 25 students are attending classes by removing the hijab. The rest have remained absent, after wearing the hijab was banned in the college. “We will contact the rest of the absentees, explaining to them how their academic year will be at stake due to a shortage in attendance,” said Anasuya.
